Zrinsko - Frankopan's Castle - Brod na Kupi

In the center of Brod na Kupi settlement, Zrinski have built their castle, a three-story building featuring a square ground-plan surrounded by outer fortifications (these have been demolished). The Zrinski citadel at Brod na Kupi dates from 1651. It was built by Prince Petar Zrinski, probably in the place of a previous Zrinski citadel from 1577 or an older Frankopan citadel dating from the 15th century or even earlier. The citadel was a type of structure that combined both fortress and residential functions and formed a fortress-palace. At present, the citadel is a simple three-story building with a four-sided roof. It appears that the third story used to be made of wood. The ground floor, which is connected to Kupica and a nearby cave by an underground tunnel, still features the original castle floor plan; the second and third story floor plans have been altered by later add-ons.
